The U.S. Pizza Team Brings Home the Silver from the World Pizza Championships for the Second Straight Year!

The team recently returned triumphant from Parma, Italy and the World Pizza Championships. Spinner Jamie Culliton and U.S. Pizza Team Acrobatic Coach placed second in the world for the second straight year.

This year also saw several new members joining the squad and competing on the culinary side. Peter Anderson of Gelsosomo's Pizza in Crown Point IN, Will Shaw of pizzaBOGO in North Olmsted, OH, Chris Mallon of 5 Points Pizza in Nashville, TN, and Samantha Jones of Mellow Mushroom in Chattanooga, TN.

Several veterans also joined the crew to compete in categories including classica, pan, gluten-free, pizza on the peel and pizza for 2, which is actually made by two pizzaiolos.

The team this year included:

David Sommers of Mad Mushroom in West Lafayette, Indiana
Michael Stevens of Palo Mesa Pizza in Arroyo Grande, California
John Coletta of Quartino in Chicago
Michael LaMarca of Master Pizza, Chagrin Falls, Ohio
William Shaw of pizzaBogo in North Olmsted, Ohio
Heather Zook of Sinfully Gluten Free in Dayton, Ohio
Leonardo Giordano of Mona Lisa Pizzeria in Staten Island, New York Bradley Johnson, Abby Robbins and Samantha Jones of Mellow Mushroom in Chattanooga, Tennessee
Jamie Culliton the U.S. Pizza Team Acrobatic Coach
Leah Scurto of Pizza My Heart in Santa Cruz, California
Rick and Jane Mines of Nima’s Pizza in Gassville, Arkansas
Chris Mallon of Five Points Pizza in Nashville, Tennessee
Peter Anderson of Gelsosomo’s Pizzeria in Crown Point, Indiana

It made the local news. I don't know what they used in Parma but his pie is really good.

An American won best world pizza?! And he doesn't cook them over a wood fire in a kiln?! I'm very surprised...and skeptical.

The owner, Paul, of Gelsosomo's in Crown Point, IN has won the World Pizza Championships in Parma, Italy. We went there the week before he left to compete. Really good sauce, sweet and savory, like a homegrown tomato, He would benefit from Aurelio's brick oven, but other than that, it was really good pizza. Crust could be a little crisper but a worthy competitor, for sure.
