Hare Krishna

We were talking about the Hare Krishna and how they used to chanting, dancing and panhandling in airports in the 1960-70s.

In the late 1970s, I was reading the "class notes" section of the UC Davis alumni magazine. You know, that section where graduates write in to brag about a promotion, an award, a marriage, or a kid? One submission was about a guy whose name I no longer remember, so I'll call him "John Doe." It basically went like this:

"John Doe, class of '73, is director of marketing and fundraising for the Hare Krishnas at the Los Angeles International Airport."

I laughed liked crazy. Always wondered if he submitted the note himself, or was being punked by a former classmate.

Hare Krishna were at every airport back in the late 60's and 70's.. They were hitting up everyone for money, especially those in uniform...

They hit me up in O'Hare when I was in uniform about 1970 or so. I gave them a couple of sentences in Russian - basically all that I remembered from my MPHS Russian class. One of them got in my face - "You will regret that when the Russians take over", something like that. Pretty funny to be lectured and hectored by a dancing chanting semi monk about the virtues of fighting Communism when that was what I was doing at the time.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), known colloquially as the Hare Krishna movement or Hare Krishnas, is a Gaudiya Vaishnava religious organisation.[1] ISKCON was founded in 1966 in New York City by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada who is worshipped by followers.[2] Its core beliefs are based on select traditional Hindu scriptures, particularly the Bhagavad-gītā and the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. ISKCON says it is a direct descendant of Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradaya.[3] The appearance of the movement and its culture come from the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, which has had adherents in India since the late 15th century and Western converts since the early 1900s in America,[4] and in England in the 1930s.[5]
