World's First Human Organ Transplant

Dr. James W. West made medical history when he helped perform the world’s first human organ transplant in 1950 at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park on a woman in desperate need of a kidney.

In 1975, the longtime Beverly resident helped Monsignor Ignatius McDermott found Chicago’s Haymarket Center, a pioneering facility for the treatment of substance abuse.

The last surviving physician from the historic kidney-transplant team, Dr. West died July 24 at his home in Palm Desert, Calif., at 98.

Reunion - Who’s Coming and From Where?

Have you checked out the “Who’s Coming” page on our website yet?  Scroll through and see if YOUR name is on the list – if not, hurry and purchase your tickets online by Tuesday.

We have a great crowd of Empehi grads attending from every elementary school from Barnard to Vanderpoel.  At this point, Mt. Greenwood is leading the pack with Clissold and Sutherland tied for second place. Of course, all the Saints are in there – Barnabas, Cajetan, Christina, Margaret, John the Fisher and Queen of Martyrs!  Of course, we can’t forget, Esmond, Kellogg and Shoop.

The Class of 1966 is best represented with the Class of 1967 threatening to take the lead.  We’ve got a healthy number from the Class of 1965 too – and some from ’64 and ’68 answered the invitation too.  Can’t wait to see you all at 6 p.m. on Friday night at Lexington House -- don't forget the Memorabilia Contest!

A last reminder that Saturday’s Dinner starts at 6 p.m.  The Friends of Bill W. will gather at TPCC at 5 p.m. – location will be posted.

The votes for the prestigious Photo Contest have been tallied.  Winners receive a trip to the Islands – Blue or Stoney.

Judy Halligan Willingham won for the “goofiest” photo. Karen Holck Ketterman won for the “most classic” photo and Hank Gentry and Nick Vlachos tied for “coolest.” The surprise here was that each guy received a landslide number of votes -- 4,513 each with a large number of hanging chads. We suspect a Chicago “Vote Early, Vote Often” pattern.  You can see all the photos on the “Classmates Today” pages of the website.

One of the most fun jobs at the reunion is working at the registration table, greeting people as they come in.  We have a few slots open if you would like to work an hour or two.  Please reply to this e-mail address as soon as possible.

Details on the reunion events are on our web site at morganparkhigh.com – watch the website for last minute information on the possible school tour and the availability of walk-in admissions.

Please bring your camera or cell phone to snap pictures during the night. After identifying the people in the pictures, please upload them to the website or blog or Facebook  for others to enjoy - instructions are on the website. You can also email or mail them to us and we will post them on line.

A Cappella Choir

We are moving and I just found a 33 LP of the 1964 A Cappella Choir on side 1 & Boys Choir on side 2. Also the "May Hum" program from the May 29, 1964 choral program. I am not able to be at he reunion but would be happy to mail this to anyone interested.

Ginnie Hans

Sadly, current circumstances prevent leaving my husand at this time even for a few days (his health is tenuous).  Thanks to all who organized the Reunion AND I wish you all a memorable and fun weekend.

We were all so fortunate to have lived and been educated in the Beverly Hills/Mount Greenwood/Morgan Park area.  I attended Sutherland through 5th grade then Clissold 6th through graduation. They were fabulous grammar schools with GREAT teachers and kids.  Of course, Empehi was an amazing school as well - both my parents as well as my grandfather graduated from MPHS, so my roots go deep.  Sorry to miss the events.

Live, laugh, love and be blessed,

         Ginnie Hans

Walking - New Urban

An important focus on new urban development and city planning is to create walkable communities. And of course walking is good for your health and good for the environment by getting people out of their cars.

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old
to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing

home at $4,000 per month.

My grandfather started walking when he was 63. Now he's 97 years old

and we have no idea where he is.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken
by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I'm doing...

I joined a health club last year, spent about 250 bucks. Haven't lost a pound.

Apparently you have to go there!

Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise', I wash my mouth out with chocolate. I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they'll say,

'Well, he looks good doesn't he.'

If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years,...... just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older, because there's a lot more information in our heads. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

AND

Every time I start thinking too much about how I look,
I just find a pub with a Happy Hour and by the time I leave,

I look just fine!

You could run this over to your friends
But just e-mail it to them!

It will save you the walk!

Submitted by Charlie Van Liere

One more thought on walking.

My mother once told us she was going to start walking a mile every day. I said "great by Thanksgiving you'll be in Omaha". She wasn't sure if I was kidding or not, and I did not tell her.

Tom Schildhouse

God gave me a finite number of heartbeats
and I am not going to waste them on walking.

The White City...Then and Now

The White City...Then and Now

Go back in time to visit the Museum during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.

This fascinating virtual simulation tour of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition takes you back in time to the Museum’s origins as the Palace of Fine Arts. A Museum host presents the computer reconstruction of the White City, created by Dr. Lisa Snyder of UCLA’s Urban Simulation Team. With highly detailed views and showing a variety of altitudes and angles, the simulation is narrated with facts and anecdotes about the Exposition. A 25-minute architectural walking tour follows the presentation. The outdoor portion of the tour is not accessible.

The Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI), the largest science center in the Western Hemisphere, is home to more than 35,000 artifacts and nearly 14 acres of hands-on experiences designed to spark scientific inquiry and creativity. Since opening our doors in 1933, we’ve welcomed more than 175 million guests from around the world. Our mission, to inspire the inventive genius in everyone by presenting captivating and compelling experiences that are real and educational, is realized through world-class exhibits such as: Science Storms, the newest permanent exhibit revealing the science behind some of nature’s most powerful phenomena;YOU! The Experience, an exhibit that lets you explore what it means to live a vital, healthy life in the 21st century; and the U-505 Submarine, the only German U-boat in the United States.
Even bigger than our mission is our vision, which is to inspire and motivate children to achieve their full potential in the fields of science, technology, engineering and medicine. In addition to our fun and interactive exhibits, the Museum’s Center for the Advancement of Science Education (CASE) is continually developing and facilitating student learning labs, after-school science clubs, teen volunteer programs, teacher development classes and community outreach—all ways in which MSI makes science come alive for children and adults of all ages.

  • Laura Schoen Seamans Good question. Back row Janet,
Julane Wohlberg, skip and couple, Cheryl Henning, Mimi, Laura Schoen, Mary Caroline Baker
Front girls were in different grades I can't recall their names! Good test of my memory! I lost a great deal of memorabilia because of floods. I won't be coming on Friday.
