The Importance of walking

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old
to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing

home at $4,000 per month.

My grandfather started walking when he was 63.

Now he's 97 years old

and we have no idea where he is.

I like long walks,

especially when they are taken

by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking

is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning,

before my brain figures out what I'm doing...

I joined a health club last year,

spent about 250 bucks.

Haven't lost a pound.

Apparently you have to go there!

Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise',

I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

I do have flabby thighs,

but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day

is so when you die, they'll say,

'Well, he looks good doesn't he.'

If you are going to try cross-country skiing,

start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise

the last few years,......

just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older,

because there's a lot more information in our heads.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

AND

Every time I start thinking too much about how I look,

I just find a pub with a Happy Hour

and by the time I leave,

I look just fine!

You could run this over to your friends

But just e-mail it to them!

It will save you the walk!

One more thought on walking.

My mother once told us she was going to start walking a mile every day. I said "great by Thanksgiving you'll be in Omaha". She wasn't sure if I was kidding or not, and I did not tell her.

God gave me a finite number of heartbeats
and I am not going to waste them on walking.

Hurricane Irene

My husband and I are headed for my daughter's house with the car packed to the gills -- thank goodness I have been preparing for our "move" to Florida for two months, so everything was in good order.

Ken stayed aboard our boat during Isabel and faced chest high water on the dock (He's 6'5") as well as 12 hours of ferrying himself around in our dinghy trying to adjust the lines on every boat on our dock, so I'm extremely happy that he has chosen to take to high ground with me.

Last time around, I evacuated to the local Best Western with our cat. We had to be removed by bus because the water was a foot deep in the lobby. The pictures I took of Fisherman's Inn across the street from the Best Western are still displayed in the lobby of the restaurant, although I fear they are about to be replaced with newer, "better" photos.

For those who have time on their hands, Google "Piney Narrows Yacht Haven" and/or Kent Island, Maryland -- you'll see why we are so outta' here. God bless those who are in Irene's path.

Dave Noren Memorial

On Monday, August 22, 2011, and exactly one year from the date that Dave Noren passed away, some of Dave's family members and friends got together at the Water's Edge Golf Course in Worth, Illinois to reminisce and pay tribute to a great friend and all around nice guy. There were 14 of us who played golf starting at 12:00 and then another 35 who came to have dinner at about 5:00. The golf course is very nice; some challenging holes and very scenic; who'd have believed it could be right in the middle of Worth, Illinois? And the club house has a good menu with very reasonable prices, too.

We couldn't have asked for a better golfing day and we had the outdoor veranda for dinner all to ourselves which made for a truly beautiful evening. We had a nice view of a lake and watched the sun set in the west. Andy Noren provided some door prizes which were all connected to Dave's life; i.e., his love for movie theater candy, his passion for a good cup (s) of coffee, his constant search for thee 'worst' movie ever made (I can attest to that, being a charter member of Dave's "Bad Movie Club") as well as other areas of Dave's interests.

Our EMPEHI classes were represented by myself, Marlene Walko and Tom Paxson as well as Andy Noren, Carol Noren and some classmates of Andy's from the class of 1972. Dave's church was well represented by Pastor Sandberg and 25 congregation members. During dinner conversations centered on some really great Dave Noren stories and everyone was in agreement that we lost a truly one-in-a-million individual.

So Dave, thanks for looking out for us by helping to provide such a great weather day and evening, (even though I know you couldn't stand the sport of golf, we all knew you were there in spirit) and know that you'll be in our thoughts for a long time to come. Maybe some day when we meet in the hereafter, I'll try to teach you the finer points of golf.........er, note, I said "try".

Dennis Carlson,
Class of 1967

Well, what a nice thing to do, Dennis, and I'm as sure as I can be that Dave was there with you smiling and yearning to all get out that he could lay ONE MORE line on you all. I'm also sure it mattered not-at-all that this affair took place at a golf course. The mere fact that it took place at all was a great tribute to a great person, and if you all enjoyed the day of golf only added to the day. Heck, if he was unhappy about the scene, I'm sure he would have rained on your parade, shall we say!!!! LOL

So glad you pulled together to remember and honor your friend and family member. What more could any of us ask for but to be remembered fondly after we are gone. Thanks for sharing this with us all, Dennis.

We spend precious hours fearing the inevitable. It would be wise to use that time adoring our families, cherishing our friends and living our lives! Maya Angelou
