Hardrock, Coco and Joe

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hardrock, Coco and Joe is a short stop motion animated cartoon based on a song written by Stuart Hamblen. It is about three of Santa Claus' helpers who ride on Santa's sleigh each Christmas

The short has become an annual "Christmas Classic" on Chicago's WGN-TV and Johnstown, PA WJAC-TV since its introduction in the mid-1950s. The film is entirely in black-and-white.

Its full title is Hardrock, Coco and Joe - The Three Little Dwarfs. It was originally created by a company called Centaur Productions utilizing the stop-motion talents of artist Wah Ming Chang. Its running time is about 2 minutes and 45 seconds. (The Santa figure's facial features resemble Wah Chang.) This cartoon is traditionally broadcast with their two other short Christmas cartoons, "Suzy Snowflake" and "Frosty the Snowman".

According to the narrative song, Hardrock drives Santa's sleigh, and Coco navigates with maps. Santa "has no need for Joe/ but takes him 'cause he loves him so". (However, in the Bozo the Clown special "A Bozo Christmas," Coco states that Joe, who was unable to go with them that year due to illness, was in charge of crisis management.)

Part of the charm of this primitively-made cartoon is that Joe, the smallest of the three, and very boyish-looking, has a deep bass voice.

Chorus:
Oh-lee-o-lay-dee, o-lay-dee-I-ay
Donner and Blitzen, away, away
Oh-lee-o-lay-dee, o-lay-dee-I-oh
I'm Hardrock!
I'm Coco!
I'm Joe!

Andy Bendel MPHS Jan 66

Our dear friend Andy Bendel MPHS Jan 66 died earlier this year.  We made 4 movies together in the 1960s.  Those features are no longer around to view.

However there is a 1992 feature film starring John Goodman that in fact features an enthusiastic radio announcer.  That radio announcer is played by our friend Andy Bendel.

Attached is the cover of the DVD of that film, as well as the scenes that feature our good friend, Andrew Bendel!
Play this clip whenever you want to remember our high school friend, Andy Bendel.

Senior Wisdom......

Senior Wisdom......

Lying around, pondering the problems of the world, I realized that, at my age, I don't really give a rat anymore. If walking is good for your health, the postman would be immortal.

A whale swims all day, only eats fish, and drinks water, but is still fat.

A rabbit runs, and hops, and only lives 15 years, while a tortoise doesn't run, and does mostly nothing, yet it lives for 150 years. And they tell us to exercise? I don't think so.

Now that I'm older, here's what I've discovered:

1.  I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.

2. My wild oats are mostly enjoyed with prunes and all-bran.

3. Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded.

4. Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded.

5. If all is not lost, then where the heck is it?

6. It was a whole lot easier to get older, than it was to get wiser.

7. Some days, you're the top dog, some days you're the hydrant.

8. I wish the buck really did stop here; I sure could use a few of them.

9. Kids in the back seat cause accidents.

10. Accidents in the back seat cause kids.

11. It is hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere.

12. The world only beats a path to your door when you're in the bathroom.

13. If God wanted me to touch my toes, he'd have put them on my knees.

14. When I'm finally holding all the right cards, everyone wants to play chess.

15. It is not hard to meet expenses . . . They're everywhere.

16. The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth.

17. These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter . . . I go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what I'm "here after".

18. Funny, I don't remember being absent-minded.

19. It is a lot better to be seen than viewed.

20. Have I sent this message to you before...or did I get it from you?

The female sleeping quarters will be out-of-bounds

The Department of the Navy is now assigning females to quarters in a separate private OFF LIMITS area on all aircraft carriers...

Addressing all boat personnel at Pearl Harbor, CINCPAC advised, "The female sleeping quarters will be out-of-bounds for all males.  Anybody caught breaking this rule will be fined $20 the first time."

He continued, " Anybody caught breaking this rule the second time will be fined $50.

Being caught a third time will cost you a fine of $100.   Are there any questions?"

At this point the Marine Sergeant Major from the security detail assigned to the ship inquired:

"How much for a season pass???"

This photo shows Old Wolf Road at about 207th in Mokena. Submitted by Nancy Osbourne

The Chicago area finally got its first snowfall of the season on Sunday.

And Mother Nature held nothing back, leaving more than 8 inches of snow for some towns and going down in the record books as the largest first snowfall of the season for Chicago. The 6.1 inches of snow recorded at O’Hare Airport on Sunday beat the previous first snowfall record of 4.6 inches set back in 1964, according to the National Weather Service.
