Naperville Outing Revisited.....

Posted by: "Julie Marschand"

To try to summarize what was in the tour I had set up for our group, I'll try to share with you all about an idea I've got cooking for when we get together again in Naperville someday. We have a trolley that anyone can rent and a friver us provided for us and we could barrel around in it to see the sights next time . We can make it a night when the band is playing outside at Potters Place and Pub Hop. It!s really fun ouside on the patio there! And of course stop at Coldstone once more for gourmet ice cteam flavors. Or they have a place called The Chocolate Cafe which sells only chocolate. There's even a delicious, heart healthy .chocolate that they let you sample free. There's two Italian Ice Shops also. I had made up a tour of places that you all might enjoy visiting and as I was sitting waiting for you all to arrive, I greeted Joanie and Dave and soneone stole it from me off of the bench inside Lou's. I can post it again if anyone wants to see it

despite that. We could have taken a tour of the Carillon Bell Tower also. The bells play various songs using six octaves. It!s a beautiful sound! There are only seven of them in the world.

They even have a walking path around the lake by our police station which is very scenic. The community's finest have the most beautiful property and land of any Police Precincf that I've ever seen.

There are many, many shops and they are found in buildings, courtyards, old fashioned western type clapboard store fronts. There are formal terraces and rooftop eateries, and more.

The artwork that is displayed outside everywhete is the most impressive accomplishment for our community of lasting value. If we had walked across the river further than the Beach, you would have seen our quarry filled lake with paddle boats to rent. There in the middle between the beach and the paddle boat lake is a refreshment house that sells ice cream, drinks and such.

If you start from the river walk downtown and travel along the east side of Washington Street south, there is a bike path that travels alomg the north-south branch of the Fox River through forested areas, residential areas, and continues to 87th street and on the East side of Washington the bike trail ends at a beautiful Forest Preserve with a lake and rest area.

The mist enduring spot in our town is Naper Settlement, an outdoor Museum Village. This includes 30 original buildings from throughout our history including a church, a homestead, a halfway house, a blacksmith, and more. During the year there are authentic classes held teaching early American skills such as Weaving, silversmithing, cooking, to name a few.

At Naper Settlement are held historic re-enactments-outdoor dramas. There are Civil War re-enactments during the summer. The settlement's ongoing program is Civil War Days, a 3 day program where the settlement is converted into a large encampment, where up to 480 actors and actresses at a time re-enact historical life and battles.

As you can tell, there is something for everyone.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed themselves Sunday. I did. Y'all come back, y'hear?
