Does anyone have pictures of Kaden's or that strip of old stores on 111th? I remember going into Kaden's as a small child to get the latest Bobbsey Twin book from the rotating display at the back of the store. Sometimes I would sit on the wooden floor and read through a book while my Mom shopped... I later switched to Nancy Drew books... but, it was not the same... I also remember the bakery, the drug store on the corner & Holmstrom Bread around the corner...

  Also--Wagner-Holmdahl's awesome bakery on Monterey, tastee-freeze and the Monterey Pharmacy...Can you guess this Esmond graduate remembers her Monterey Ave. Trivia...also Polka Chic and Doc's Hobby Shop (was that the name of the penny candy store we always went to on our way home?). Aahh-don't get me started:)

  Paula Hillier PS--111th Street was called Monterey Ave. for that stretch from the tracks to about Vincennes.

  Maribeth Montgomery Kasik Thanks Paula! I appreciate the correct spelling & the names! You are correct about 111th / Monterey too! The exit from I-57 (Exit #355) still cross lists it. I remember that penny candy store, but not the name. I think "Kam's" was the name of the penny candy store on 99th & Wood?

  Maribeth Montgomery Kasik Wendy, most of my shoes 5th grade & up came from the Beverly Shoe Store on 103rd St. too.... It is now shares by Heritage Gallery on one side and Beverly Bakery on the other side. On 103rd we had Nancy's Snack Shop, Johnson's Drug Store, Kasper 's, Jewel, the Barber Shop, Nearly New, The Beverly Variety, Flowers by Esther, Stankow Furs, the Hardware store, etc... The local Starbucks was once the Christian Science a Reading Room...

  Lorie Robare Kam's was on 107th St. between Wood and Hale. I bought enough penny candy there to cause me expensive dental problems now! LOL

  John Foster Doug Reynolds was a pharmacist there too. Monterey Pharmacy a MP Grad but decessed now.

  John Foster Nancys on 103rd ate there many times and Kams bought a lot of stuff there too  Reids toystore on 99th & Wood sold pennt candy too

  Maribeth Montgomery Kasik Cam's on 107th, Reid's on 99th... What was the little store on 115th & Hale? ... What was the name of the one near 111th/Montery? There was also Bread & Bottle on 119th & Kasper's, later Charlie's on 103rd and of course the Purple Cow on Western to name a few...

  Carol Noren Jack Simmerling painted a lovely picture of the strip of stores on Monterey from Kaden's to Monterey Pharmacy. I bought a framed print earlier this year, and it even included some Kaden's trading stamps on the mat! I imagine you could buy a print if you went to Heritage Gallery on 103rd Street.

  Maribeth Montgomery Kasik Jack's daughter has taken over the Heritage Gallery since his recent passing... She has moved down the block to the old Beverly Shoe Store location. She carries a lot of her father's work...

  Maribeth Montgomery Kasik Purple Cow was mostly about purple ice cream, sodas & a candy shop... Kid's birthday parties. They did have coffee & I think hamburgers & hotdogs at one time

  Carey Anderson I just found a Purple Cow banner in one of my closets. My daughter had stuck it to the back wall. Perfect condition. I have no idea what to do with it tho. Kris you are welcome to it if you want it.

  Jon Habermaas Here is a painting by local artist Jack Simmerling showing the block of stores on the north side of Monterey just east of Hale Ave. The drugstore on the corner had a soda fountain which we found a good after school alternative to Parkeys
