Photos of Mt Greenwood in the southwest corner of Chicago. The neighborhood has seen substantial investment in housing, in part because city workers are required to live in the City and it is seen as a desirable and safe neighborhood. A typical expansion is to build a second or third story on top of the original one story home.
The bungalows on the right were the original homes. The large single family to the left are replacement homes.
Second stories added to the original one story home.
The large home above is on the corner of Hamlin and 107th. The site originally was Hogan's, a very small one story store.
My parents home above at 106th and Lawndale. The home below was owned by the parents of a friend of mine a few doors down the street. Notice how the appearance was dramatically changed with the new front construction.
When I used to go back "home" to Mt. Greenwood, I loved walking the old neighborhood, looking at all the changes to the old homes. The new porches, additions and second stories are amazing! I love that the old neighborhood is thriving.
