Red Tide - Southwest Florida

I went down to the beach today in Sarasota and Bradenton.  Terrible odor, dead fish, virtually no people at the beach.  The air was oppressive and caused eye and respiratory irritation. An environmental disaster.  Major impacts on tourism and homes on the beach.

Clearly a call for major action to improve the environment.  And the elected officials who let this happen should suffer the consequences.

As a nation we have made major advances in improving our environment.  When I was a young man our air and water quality were terrible. We looked at the flames and soot emerging from our blast furnaces in south Chicago and saw prosperity. Polluted rivers were a caust,

I was part of the environmental improvements made in the 70's and 80's and 90's.  We spend an enormous amount of money to control our air and water pollution and for the most part succeeded. And travelling to poor countries is illuminating - the air and water quality are often terrible.

But the red tide is a an example that we still have a long way to go.

The beaches are deserted.
