I'm sad to say that John Powers just died of a heart attack at 67. He didn't go to MPHS, but he was a Mount Greenwood guy (St. Christina and Brother Rice H.S.) who wrote some wonderful and successful books and stories about growing up back then (The Last Catholic in America, Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, etc.). I imagine some of you knew him, as I did, from the neighborhood, from playing baseball with him as kids, from his writing, and from seeing him on stage or on television. Although not a close friend, I did run into John fairly often until we moved south in 2005. I remember John as a very friendly, humble gentleman who was always approachable, pleasant, and entertaining. He will be missed.
- Judy Halligan Willingham John Powers lived three doors from my family on Drake Street. As Jim Seamon said, he went to St. Christina School. He was about the same age as my brother Johnny and, in fact, based the character Johnny Hellger, on my brother. His books were funny, insightful and touching. I am so sorry to hear about his death -- way too young!
- Susan McBride Newhard I would imagine any bookstore. You have to read the series, startimg with the Last Catholic in America, then Do Patent Leather shoes Really Reflect Up and then the Unoriginal Sinner and the Ice Cream god. You will really chuckle and recognize every place he describes. Just wonderful.
- Kristine Lang My brother wrote to me yesterday to let me know, he lives in Lake Geneva and played basketball w/ him. They were good friends but John led a very private life.
- Susan Engle Budash Having gone to St John Fisher and so many having attended Brother Rice, I vaguely recall meeting John at a party in the neighborhood.
- Judy Halligan Willingham He called it Seven Holy Tombs or something similar...b/c of all the cemeteries.
- John Wason I never knew John Powers, but somewhere along the line I read all of his novels. Great stuff! I wish I had the patience and initiative to write about my Mt. Greenwood childhood - but I guess it's already been done.
- Craig Harlan Hullinger Sorry to hear it. I loved his books, and knew a few of the characters he wrote about. Will put this on the blog. http://empehi.com
