The Social Dilemma - Problems With Social Media

I suggest that everyone watch "The Social Dilemma" on Netflix as it is a fact based documentary by the inventors of all of the social media sites on why the world is divided as it is. (And how it will get worse). It is scary to watch but well worth the 90 minutes of time spent watching it.

I have monitored but seldom posted to any of the sites. I just felt that this was too important to not let people know about it.

Thanks, Gary Menne

I watched part of it. Very interesting.

Like many technological innovations, social media has led to both good and bad things.

Examples

Automobiles - Increased mobility but also pollutes and causes numerous deaths

Nuclear - Cheap power but increased chances of worldwide destruction

Automation - Cheaper better products but fewer highly paid blue collar jobs

As many of you know, I use a lot of social media - All our links at http://www.empehi.com/ and or http://www.empehi.com/
first post on the upper left.

Social media lets us stay or regain contact - ie this site, Facebook, Twitter LinkedIn, etc. That is a good thing.

But it also enables a lot of misinformation to spread - all you have to do is read the posts your friends and relatives
send you from strange uninformed bloggers.

And it can also lead to a lot of anger among those who divide on politics.

And major companies like Google and Facebook learn a lot about you.

And scammers may glean info from your social media posts to con you.

So, what to do?

If one is very worried about this, it is best to check out of the net - don't use email, Facebook, LinkedIn, internet buying, banking, etc.

Go off the grid.

Or you can figure the benefit outways the risk. That is where I at. Now I think I will blog this discussion on www.empehi.com

Plus put it on our Facebook Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest pages.

Will welcome input from the other folks on this list for the blog post. Your opinion counts - to us, anyway.

I thought the last 20 minutes of it was scary to me.  I don't really care what they know about me.  When they say that they can slowly change people's thinking about what society should be, not through human intervention, but through algorithms using AI that even their inventors can't get ahead of. The programmers themselves don't even know how to control it. The only benefit I can see is, I own stock in their companies. But at the detriment of the future world.
