My brother, Larry Dart, was a great guy and my best friend. We grew up on the southwest side of Chicago in the neighborhood of Mount Greenwood. Larry and I loved music and he was involved in it all his life. He was also a sports fan who was an excellent baseball player. He played first base at Morgan Park High School. He was a very good student, and a 1967 graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He was attending Drake Law School when he was drafted. He enlisted hoping to get a better job than infantry. He got Combat Engineer. While in-country he was very popular with his fellow soldiers and worked hard at his job. Two weeks before he was mortally wounded he won the Silver Star for rescuing several men from a ATC that hit a mine and burned. He was injured while clearing a road of a barrel that was booby trapped. He died a week later at Long Bien Hospital.
He left behind a beautiful wife, Bette Gae, and many friends. I was his only brother and I miss him more every year. Because every year my children and grand children grow older and more wonderful and I wish they could have been blessed by the company of their Uncle Larry. I do what I can to keep his memory alive in them.
From his brother,Jim Dart jadart@verizon.net |
The point-of-contact for this memorial is his brother, Jim Dart jadart@verizon.net |
Your classmates remember and admire your bravery, service
and sacrifice. You were a stand up at guy Morgan Park High,
and your Silver Star is proof of your honor and courage. In spite of numerous secondary explosions you returned several times to the blazing vehicle to aid in evacuating the wounded men.

AWARDS AND CITATIONS
Silver Star
Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Lawrence Michael Dart (ASN: RA-68053201), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 65th Engineer Battalion, 25th Infantry Division. Specialist Fourth Class Dart distinguished himself by heroic actions on 25 October 1969, while serving as a demolition specialist attached to Company C, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam.
While on a combat operation, an armored personnel carrier hit an anti-tank mine and began to burn. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Dart dismounted his armored vehicle and ran to assist the wounded personnel. In spite of numerous secondary explosions, Specialist Dart returned several times to the blazing vehicle to aid in evacuating the wounded men.
His valorous actions were responsible for saving the lives of three men. Specialist Dart's bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Mills Miller saved my life once in high school because he told me the symptoms I described at a progressive dinner (remember those?) might be my appendix... instead of going to the next course... I went to the family doctor (at her home.. another memory) and my appendix was removed the next day .... Had Mills not warned me I may have ignored the issue as I often had similar ones (Chronic appendix issues) and may not be here to say Thank You.
I never got to thank him at the time.
Thank you.
