Snakes !!

Snakes for the Memory

When I managed the Woods Theater in downtown Chicago, we premiered a classic film titled "Stanley". It involved a deranged person named Tim who gained revenge on his adversaries by use of a snake named "Stanley"!

On the premiere day (May 26, 1972) the Woods lobby was filled with cages of snakes! The co-star of the film, Susan Carroll, was on hand to promote this epic film. Seeking more paying customers than were coming through the doors, Susan wound a huge snake around her neck and walked outside the theater onto the sidewalk in front of the Woods. It was amazing to see the crowded mid-morning traffic on the sidewalk in front of the Woods diminish as passersby spotted the coiled reptile and decided they were needed elsewhere!

Three American Heroes

These three friends saved the day by taking down the heavily armed terrorist on the French Train.  Way to go, guys.

French President Francois Hollande has thanked three American men hailed as heroes for overpowering a heavily-armed gunman on a train in northern France.

"Two of the American men who overpowered the gunman, Spencer Stone and Alek Skarlatos, are members of the Air Force and the National Guard respectively. They were travelling on the train from Amsterdam to Paris on Friday evening with a childhood friend, Anthony Sadler, who also helped restrain the attacker."
"I grabbed the handgun, got that away from the guy and threw it. Then I grabbed the AK-47, which was at his feet, and started muzzle-bumping him in the head with it. Everybody just started beating the guy while Spencer held the choke hold until he went unconscious."

Summer Pizza party at Palermo's on August 14, 2015 at 7:00PM

Hi Craig! Would you please post this note about our mini-reunion at Palermos last Friday on all of the MPHS SITES. THANK YOU. HOPE ALL IS WELL WITH YOUR WIFE and life is fun down in Florida! We plan to have another one in Early December. If you are in town maybe you can attend. Julie

PIZZA PARTY-MINI REUNION AT PALERMOS IN OAK LAWN 8-14-15.

Our group of nine had great time and conversation with each other at our pizza party at Palermos on 95th Street in Oak Lawn, IL.  We all were so thrilled about being able to be with our event planner and host, Dennis Carlson. About three weeks ago, Dennis suffered a cardiac arrest right after carrying groceries into his home. He called neighbors who insisted on calling 911. When the paramedics arrived at Dennis' house, they took him to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights. At the Denis' heart stopped three times and his heart was stopped for six minutes on and off.

Upon arriving and seeing Dennis, his family doctor did not think he was going to make it out of that predicament alive. Glad he was wrong. Being the natural born storyteller, while Dennis was coding, he sensed something was wrong and asked this young intern "are you a doctor? Am I going to die?....because if I am going to die, I want you to find me a sword; because I'm a Viking and a Viking has to die with a sword in his hand".

The intern later apologized to his wife for not being able to find the sword and fulfill my family tradition....to which Margi replied "what tradition?"......"he was quoting a line from a movie". We assume Dennis wasn't quite fully conscious while giving the guy this request. ;-). I can just see the snarky grin on Denny's face listening to this guy's apology.

Referring back to reality, the paramedics were able to revive him after his heart stopped three times for a total of six minutes while he was at the emergency room of St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights. After a 1 week stay in the hospital, having a pacemaker implanted in his chest surgically, and staying home for 2 weeks, Dennis returned to work for half days 3 weeks after his incident.

Denny, you are a very tough, hard-to-keep-down man! I look forward to talking with the ladies too next time because there wasn't enough time to hear Den's story and talk with others there. This time I was totally shocked while listening to Dennis because I couldn't believe all that had happened in such a short time span. It was lots of fun sharing with everybody and the pizza and anti pasta salad was delicious food and we all look forward to having our next pizza party together in early December.

Summer Pizza party at Palermo's on August 14, 2015 at 7:00PM

A great time was had by the nine (9) of us who attended the Summer Mini-Reunion Pizza Party at Palermo's last night, Friday-August 14th. Delicious pizza, a few drinks and lots of laughs with interesting conversation and funny stories were on the menu. We also raised our drinks and pizza slices high in a tribute to the founder of these Mini-Reunions, Dave Noren; August 21st will mark the 5th anniversary of his death.

Those in attendance were Lois & Merle, Susan McBride Newhard, Carol Hager Zalga, Chris Leo, Marlene Walko, Julie Ward Marschand, Bob Laschober and yours truly. We hope to have one more Pizza Party before the end of the year, probably in the beginning of December, before things get too hectic with the Christmas rush. Until then, have a great rest of the summer, a pleasant Fall and a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Greetings, EMPEHI-ites;

How is your Summer going, so far? For me, it's been too wet and going by too darned quickly. I've heard it said that once we pass the 4th of July, that the Summer is almost over. Well, I don't know if that's true or not, but, one things is true... we haven't had a Pizza Mini-Reunion in quite some time.

So, how about circling your calendar for Friday evening, 7:00PM at Palermo's Restaurant on 95th Street in Oak Lawn.

Be ready for some delicious pizza, lots of laughs and great conversation with some very interesting and pleasant people.....us! Please tell your friends and come on by. The more the merrier.

Please drop me an e-mail if your are coming so I'll have a good count to give for our reservation. Looking forward to seeing you.
