Abraham Lincoln's Duel

Abraham Lincoln nearly fought a duel. The history of the United States could have been much different if he had fought the duel and lost - or won. There are numerous accounts of this episode - what follows is my summary of many of the different accounts.


In 1842 a scurrilous letter to the editor was published mocking the State Auditor Democrat James Shields. It is not 

 Mary Todd  -she turned so many heads that as her brother-in-law
put it, “she could make a bishop forget his prayers.”
certain who actually wrote the letter - some think it was Mary Todd, not yet married to Lincoln. Or Lincoln may have written the letters himself - sources vary.  In any event Shields accused Lincoln of writing the letter.
After some give and take Lincoln would not apologize. Shields challenged Lincoln to a duel.  Dueling was not legal in Illinois. But on the American frontier to refuse to respond to the duel challenge was the same as admitting you were a coward.
As the challenged party Lincoln chose the weapons and rules. Lincoln chose the largest cavalry swords available. He also stipulated that both men would face each other in a small space divided by a board. They could not cross the board or retreat from the board.
Lincoln was six feet four inches tall. Shields was a smaller man who would be at a great disadvantage in what would likely be a one strike fight.  But Shields did not back down.
The two men and their seconds traveled by wagon from Springfield towards an island in the Mississippi River.  The seconds ran back and forth between the two wagons in an effort to reach an agreement before the duel.
They eventually reached an agreement.  Lincoln did not

exactly apologize but did express regret that anything he may have written could have been construed to be an insult.


Shields and Lincoln were friendly before and after this event. Shields became a General in the Civil War. Shields also went on to be a US Senator representing three different States.

William N. Phillips III, 80, died 2/4/2015. Devoted husband to the late Kathleen (McAuliffe). Beloved father of Kathleen (Richard Carey) Joni (David Austin) Janine (John Luzzo). Adored grandfather of Richard (Nichole) Bridget, Colleen (James Morgan) Mary Kathleen, William, Jack, and James. Loving great-grandfather to Nolan and Fiona. Cherished friend to Jacqueline Bushen. Brother to the late Betty Jean (Ward), the late Marion Pihl and Patricia Montague. 

Friend and mentor to many. CPS teacher at Morgan Park High School for 35 years. 10:30 Visitation 11:30 Mass Saturday February 14, 2015. St George Church, 6707 W 175th St. Tinley Park.

  Colleen Anne Howard I'm just remembering that I saw Mr Phillips a few year after graduating. I told him he was one if my favorite teachers and I really learned so much from him. He taught differently, and was not so serious in the class room. He said "yea sure I was" but I assured him I meant it. I don't know if he ever believed me, but I'm glad I had the chance to tell him.

  Susan McBride Newhard I never enjoyed being associated with anyone at MPHS more than I did Bill Phillips. He was always full of the devil and when John Lawlor was thrown into the mix look out. I had service for him 2 period for two years it was a blast. I have thought and talked about him so much over the years and I did so with a lot of fondness. The world laughed a little more having Bill Phillips in it.

I can't imagine Mr. Phillips as 80 yr old..! I always think of him as young and handsome the way he was when we knew him at Morgan Park.

I didn't have Mr. Phillips as a teacher, but, I got to know him as a fellow smoker on "The Smoking Line" in the mornings. On several mornings during my senior year, I would be having a smoke right at the "line" and Mr. Phillips would come up and say, "hey kid, you're not supposed to be smoking here." And I would reply, "but, I'm behind the line". He'd say, "oh, so you are......well, how about giving me a smoke and we'll call it even".........whatever that meant because I wasn't over the line. Anyway, we would smoke a cigarette and talk about stuff in general and then it was off to class. He seemed more like a student than a teacher; so easy to talk to, so easy going and cheerful and happy. I'm sorry I didn't get to know him better. Mr. Phillips was a good friend with Mr. Hurst, as they owned a nursery together for a number of years.

I can just imagine them sitting around having a cup of coffee together and shooting the bull. RIP Mr. Phillips. You were a class act.
