The Avengers
"The Avengers" represented a glance at the British sensibility on our American television screens. This is of course the British TV series starring Diana Rigg and Patrick McNee in the mid 1960s. I was in college and marveled at each episode as the Steed and Peel character took on and triumphed over seemingly brilliant villains!
On our B&W TV screen my parents and I enjoyed these James Bondish episodes featuring Emma Peel and John Steed. They unraveled and resolved the weekly dilemma posed by supposedly master-minded villains bent on world domination and related aspirations. The first episodes were in B&W and later turned into color, though we didn't have a color TV until a decade later.
I have in my DVD collection all of the Diana Rigg "Avenger" episodes. There are 52 episodes. So I can, when I wish, travel back in time to those mid 1960s episodes and enjoy what was then a British presentation of the modern woman and her partner in triumph, John Steed.
If challenged then, I would declare the "Avengers" TV series was in my top ten TV shows of that decade! Viewing it some 40 years later, I'm not so sure! The James Bond and British film invasion now doesn't seem so magnificent! With overuse, it now seems to be just a trend.
I, however, will always treasure both the series as a major influence in my viewing life! By the way, Rigg's character's name "Emma Peel" was a brilliant suggestion in a planning session when her character had to have "Male Appeal", or in other words "M"-Appeal!
(The original "Avengers" series starred both McNee and Honor Blackman. Then of course came Diana Rigg. Linda Thorson came next and much, much later Joanna Lumley in "The New Avengers".)

1) Repair and Resurface Track and Football Field
2) Replace Sound and Lighting Systems in Blackwelder Hall
3) Upgrade Overall Technology (i.e. Smartboards, Laptops/Ipads carts for students, Audio/visual equipment for proposed global communication center, etc.)
4) Revive Foreign Exchange and Educational Travel Abroad Program
If you would be willing, please consider supporting us financially in this endeavor. Donating is Quick and Easy! Go to www.morganparkcps.org , go to the Alumni Tab and Click on Online Giving.

The Ipcress File ------ 1965 - Movie Review
My Movie Monday (Wednesday?)
The Ipcress File ------ 1965
(from my top 101-200 favorite films)
When first released a half century ago, this film was promoted as the answer to James Bond. Many critics liked it but the swelling number of Bond fans rejected it because of its cynical characteristics and over the top cinematography. In 1965 I loved the James Bond films but also highly enjoyed "The Ipcress File". As the decades wore on and Bond became an entrenched and seemingly never ending parade of adaptations and remakes I started to feel that "The Ipcress File" gained strength in its outsider's view of the world of spying.
There were three Harry Palmer (the Michael Caine "spy" character) movies filmed. All starred Michael Caine. "The Ipcress file" was the first, then came "Funeral in Berlin"(1966) followed by "The Billion Dollar Brain"(1967).
As is usual with my enjoyment of movies, the music plays a major role. John Barry composed the score for "The Ipcress File". John Barry? Didn't he compose the music for some of the early James Bond films? Yes! The producers felt his score would both help "The Ipcress File" and tie it to the James Bond films which were then bursting with popularity. I bought the vinyl soundtrack of "The Ipcress File" and still listen to it. It produces a certain mood or feeling that enhances the action of this gritty film.
Michael Caine's portrayal of Harry Palmer, to me is priceless! He is a self serving rebel roped into the British secret service, not of his own accord. He is cynical and irreverent. He is defiant and works out-of-the-box on a daily basis. He wears glasses and loves cooking. Truly a unique character!
The plot is intricate and the camerawork and editing very stylish. But I am enthralled today as much as I was in 1965 by the telling of this spy tale of the 1960s. I find "The Ipcress File" a joy to drink in!
Cast:
Michael Caine ------ Harry Palmer
Nigel Green ------ Dalby
Guy Doleman ------ Ross
Sue Lloyd ------ Jean
Gordon Jackson ------ Carswell
Aibrey Richards ------ Radcliffe
